No one thinks it’ll happen to them but even the best of us with the best of intentions find ourselves in divorce court battling it out with someone we thought we loved so much. There really is a thin line between love and hate.

So when I found an article that focused on some crazy facts about divorce, I thought it was worthy of mention. Maybe if we all had an idea of what divorce is really all about, we wouldn’t bother getting married in the first place. Wait, was that right?

1. Couples who marry under age 20 and who have an income of under $25,000 have a very high risk of divorcing. I hate to say it, but really, is anyone surprised by this?
2. The average divorce costs upwards of $50,000. That’s more than the cost of the wedding. And you don’t even get gifts for it.
3. Divorce seems to be in decline everywhere… but in Utah. But Utah’s biting back. In 2007, they created a law that forces potential divorcees to attend some kind of class in the hopes that they might reconcile.
4. Divorce came to exist because of the Protestant Reformation.
5. Liberal divorce laws tend to create political revolutions. Coincidence? I think not.

So if you’re thinking of getting married, you might want to spend many years living with your partner first. Last thing you want to do is dish out $50,000 if things turn sour.

And if you’re considering a divorce, reconsider. Try taking a look back at what brought you two together in the first place and attempt to ignite those sparks once again.

Or you can always just stay married technically and get on with your life as a single person. It’s cheaper, that’s for sure.
